Sustainability

Aligned with the Australian Curriculum, Jolimont Primary School is dedicated to fostering sustainability education to cultivate a future-focused approach centred on environmental preservation and social justice through informed actions.

As a newly accredited WasteSorted school, we promote G.R.E.A.T. behaviours of: gifting, recycling, earthcycling, avoiding, and taking, encouraging students to do better than landfill and get waste in the right place. Our collaboration with the community seeks to integrate sustainability practices into the fabric of our school culture, ensuring a collective commitment to a more ecologically conscious and socially equitable world.

Jolimont Primary School implements the Department of Education’s Sustainability Framework – Caring for Country. This provides the structure that will guide and empower our student’s thinking, actions and decision making on sustainability. The framework manifests in different ways for different people, and is far more than simply ‘looking after land’. It reflects a mutual relationship between people and where they live, encompassing economic, social/cultural and environmental aspects that all need to be sustained for the wellbeing of people, and the wellbeing of the world.

As part of the Business Plan, engagement in our sustainability programs offers students a comprehensive learning experience encompassing environmental education, skill development, leadership roles, and community involvement, empowering them to drive positive change. Students gain heightened environmental awareness through practical activities like waste audits and earth cycling, fostering a deeper understanding of waste sorting stations and resource conservation with our Jolimont Primary School Recycling Hub. Leadership opportunities within the program cultivate essential skills such as communication and problem-solving, while assigning responsibility for specific tasks instils ownership.

Jolimont Primary School Recycling Hub

The Recycling Hub, involves all classes from Kindergarten to Year 6. Nominated recyclable items can be dropped off by students, staff or families (located near Room 1). Containers for Change

The school is registered with Containers for Change. This means we collect and return empty drink containers for the 10 cent refund, which assists a social enterprise by Viktor Strezik of ‘Recycle man Perth’. In addition, the community is also able to donate their refunds to the school, by using our Scheme ID when returning containers.
